Brotkatze

For this exhibition, he sculpts small cats from bread dough and arranges them in absurd, imaginative scenarios within a universe created for these characters, each representing a human alter ego. Kommissar Hjuler and Mama Baer moved from experimental music and performance art into object art and painting and have recently added film as a medium.

They are represented by various galleries and have both been members of the internationally active NO!art Movement since 2009. As part of this concept, Brotkatze has inspired creations in music, film, and performance. Today, Brotkatze has evolved into a platform involving over 90 artists worldwide, though the focus will remain on Kommissar Hjuler and his Brotkatzen-themed assemblages in the coming years.

This fictional confrontation has inspired an international collaboration in which artists from various backgrounds (Europe, Brazil, Iran, USA) explore the theme through photography, painting, sculpture, performance, and video. Each artist uniquely interprets and responds to Brotkatze, bringing in elements that resonate personally and situating them within a framework of societal and cultural tensions.

As a result, the Brotkatze artworks collectively present an expansive cross-section of contemporary artistic perspectives, focusing on conflict-relevant, timely issues. This array reflects not only diverse artistic styles but also a rich exploration of underlying themes in our current global climate.
