Cavaliere Social

With our sculpture "Il Cavaliere Social," we have brought to life an idea that explores the tensions between tradition and modernity, spirituality and consumerism, as well as individuality and conformity in the digital era.

This piece serves as a central element of our Cruxials series, which examines the symbolism of the cross and reinterprets its meaning within a contemporary context. The figure of the knight, nailed to a cross, forms the core of the work. It combines iconic elements of the medieval hero, who once stood for honor, faith, and values, with the signs and symbols of the modern digital world.

The helmet, covered with the logos of social media giants such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, becomes the bearer of a new form of worship and dependency. This “digital knight” thus becomes a symbol of our society, oscillating between admiration for technology and entrapment in social platforms.

The depiction of crucifixion, an ancient symbol of sacrifice and devotion, is deliberately alienated here. The “Cavaliere Social” is not a martyr for higher spiritual values but a representation of the sacrifices made by individuals in the age of social media: the surrender of privacy, authenticity, and inner peace for the sake of likes, followers, and digital visibility. We ask: Who or what is truly being worshiped here? And at what cost? Is our inner and outer armor strong enough to protect us from the blows and stings emanating from the ether?

The choice of materials and colors underscores the dual message of the work. The golden version gives the sculpture an almost divine aura, drawing a parallel to religious icons. The antique silver version, on the other hand, suggests transience and destruction, making the figure appear like an artifact of a long-lost culture, a warning, perhaps, of what might remain of our digital era.

The spiral forms on the chest and the detailed ornaments on the armor point to craftsmanship but simultaneously evoke the coldness and mechanics of technology. These contrasts run throughout the work, reinforcing the central question: How much humanity remains in a world governed by algorithms and platforms?

“Il Cavaliere Social” is not an accusation but an invitation to reflect. Every viewer is confronted with the question: Am I myself such a “digital knight,” submitting to the dictates of social media or fighting against the dragons it creates? How far am I willing to go in sacrificing my individuality and authenticity to become part of a larger but often superficial network? The knight’s outstretched arms, a classic motif of devotion, symbolize both the yearning for acceptance and the inability to break free from this grip.

We see ourselves as a collective redefining the boundaries between art, society, and spirituality through our work. With “Il Cavaliere Social,” we intentionally lead the viewer to a place of confrontation. Our work unites historical and religious symbols with the banal yet powerful signs of the present to bridge the past and the present. It aims not only to appeal aesthetically but also to spark discourse on how technology and social media shape our identities and values.

We invite you to explore the deeper questions this work raises. We hope that “Il Cavaliere Social” will, in the distant future, find its place in both private and public spaces, as a memorial, an inspiration, and a topic of discussion about the role of the individual in the digitalized world and how we may have ultimately destroyed it.
