Our work, a marble cube with the inscriptions “IO” (I), “TE” (You), and “NOI” (We) in ancient Roman capital letters, was a deliberate reflection on human behavior during times of crisis. The pandemic that gripped the world at that time revealed a sharp divide between selfishness and solidarity. During the lockdown, it became clear that solidarity was often minimized, and personal well-being was frequently the priority. This inspired us to use the cube as a metaphor, an object that is “memoryless” with each roll and starts each decision anew.
With “l’egoismo indifferente,” we wanted to invite viewers to question their own priorities: When do we act purely out of self-interest (“IO”), and when do we consider the needs of the community (“TE” and “NOI”)? The cube served as a symbol of the balancing act that each person performs when choosing between personal gain and the well-being of the collective.
The presentation at UNI#CITTÀ, as part of the White Carrara project’s performance, was more than just an exhibition for us; it was a call for self-reflection and an attempt to show viewers that every decision, like every roll of the dice, is a new opportunity to choose between selfishness and a sense of community. Our participation in this event showed us how art, in a time of global uncertainty, can spark conversations and contribute to the search for balance between the individual and society.
